Let’s talk about pores – those tiny openings on our skin that often get misunderstood! We all have them, and they’re essential for keeping our skin hydrated and healthy. Here’s a breakdown of how pores work and how to take care of them.


Sebaceous Filaments: Every pore is connected to sebaceous (oil) glands that produce sebum – the oil that keeps our skin moisturized. Inside the pore, there are natural threads called sebaceous filaments. These filaments help transport oil from the gland to the skin’s surface. They can appear gray or yellowish, and while they may seem noticeable, they’re harmless! Those with larger pores or oilier skin might notice them more, but it’s important to remember that these filaments are a normal and essential part of skin function.


Blackheads: Blackheads are often confused with sebaceous filaments. However, they are a bit different. A blackhead forms when sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria clog the pore. The oil inside the pore oxidizes when exposed to air, turning black. Blackheads are an indication of a clogged pore, while sebaceous filaments are just a natural part of the skin’s oil regulation process.


Pore Size: Here’s an important fact – pore size is largely genetic. This means you can’t permanently shrink or eliminate your pores. Any product that claims to do so is overselling its abilities. However, keeping pores clean and clear is key to reducing their appearance. Pores that are regularly clogged with dead skin cells, bacteria, or oil can appear larger. So, while we can't change their size, we can help them look smaller by maintaining healthy skin.


Myth: Pores Can “Open” and “Close”: A common misconception is that pores can open and close like a door. This isn't true. Pores don’t have muscles around them to "open" or "close." What actually happens is that pores can appear larger due to factors like increased oil production, clogged pores, or skin texture. Heat or sweating can also create the illusion that pores are "opening," but it’s more about how they appear under different conditions.


Sun Damage and Pores: As we age and accumulate sun damage, the skin around our pores can weaken. The collagen and elastin in our skin break down over time, causing the skin to sag and the pore walls to become lax. This can make pores appear larger, which is just another reason why sunscreen should be part of your daily routine!


How to Make Pores Appear Smaller: While we can’t change the actual size of our pores, we can make them look smaller and healthier. Here are some tips:

  1. Use Salicylic Acid and Retinol: Both of these ingredients help prevent clogged pores. Salicylic acid exfoliates inside the pore, while retinol helps increase cell turnover, preventing buildup that can make pores look larger.

  2. Get Regular Facials: Professional extractions from a licensed esthetician can clear out your pores, keeping them clean and minimizing their appearance.

  3. Exfoliate Regularly: Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and helps smooth out the skin’s texture, which can reduce the appearance of large pores. Just make sure you’re not over-exfoliating, as that can irritate the skin.

  4. Try Masks: Certain masks can help with oil control, unclogging pores, and improving the overall appearance of your skin.

  5. Wear Sunscreen: Protecting your skin from sun damage is crucial to prevent pore walls from weakening and making them look larger. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is your best defense.


So, while we can’t physically shrink our pores, we can take steps to keep them clean, healthy, and looking their best. Remember, healthy pores are happy pores, and they play a key role in maintaining your skin’s natural balance. Always wear sunscreen, exfoliate regularly, and get professional help when needed to keep your skin glowing!
